In contrast to the 2018, 2019 and 2020 wine years, 2021 turned out to be an almost “normal” wine year.
After a late bud break with very different vegetation phases, there were periods in which plenty of rain and warmth alternated.
In the middle of the year, the high humidity became a problem, and there was a risk of fungal attack.
To counteract this, we carried out a “green harvest” and divided the compact Riesling grapes by cutting off the tops everywhere.
In this way we prevented the dangerous pinch rot, promoted the drying of the grapes after rainstorms and at the same time carried out a yield regulation in the direction of a significant improvement in quality.
Just in time for the harvest, there was strong sunshine and warmth again, which significantly increased the must weight of our grapes.
At the time of harvest, our grapes had excellent Oechsle values of 81 to 88 degrees.
Together with Florian Weingart, we have succeeded in creating a complete collection of four characteristic, fresh Middle Rhine Rieslings with fine fruit and a subtle play of acidity with the 2021 vintage, which the lover will have fond memories of for a long time.
